Arundel

The banks’ slopes are planted with Hakonechloa, giving verdant greens in the summer and golden hues into the winter, and recreating the movement of wind over the wheat fields of the Downs.

This newly renovated historical property is one of Arundel’s unique landmarks, situated on the side of a steep hill with sloped land surrounding the home. Our clients wanted the garden to reflect the landscape of the surrounding Sussex chalk downland, an idea which Mark brought to life in a number of ways.

Responding to the slopes of the Downlands landscape, Mark personally sculpted the raised banks that surround the home. He created pathways and ridges that invite exploration into all areas of the garden, so that its panoramic views and destination areas could be fully enjoyed. Inspired by the dew ponds of the South Downs that reflect the sky, Mark designed a pool in an organic shape that is the focal point from the house, surrounding it with shingle and local Horsham stone.

The planting for this project was completed in spring 2024 so we are excited to see how it fills out and flourishes in the next couple of seasons - the Hakonechloa creating green waves across those steep banks, perennials flourishing and newly planted trees getting their roots down. Watch this space for an update next year on how everything is getting on
